Handing over the cash to Ashraf
The final figure raised by the somethingniceforashraf campaign was £23,221. We finally got to meet Ashraf at the Malaysian Embassy. He is a lovely lad and wished to express how touched he was by the many gestures of support he had received through this campaign and others. He hasn’t yet decided what he intends to spend the money on. Ashraf was particularly keen to make sure that some of the money raised goes to other riot victims and has put aside £5,000 for this use. A notice on how this money will be spent will be posted on this site. Once again, an enormous thank you to everyone who supported the campaign.

Pay Pal Problems
It seems some people who have donated via PayPal have been receiving messages from PayPal stating that their donation has been ‘unclaimed’. I have spent an hour on the phone to Paypal today trying to work out what this means and how it can be resolved. Their analysis so far is “don’t know why that happened”. Anyone affected is advised to contact PayPal directly (unhelpful I know).
1. This will not affect the final total figure - which is based on funds that have hit the PayPal and JustGiving accounts.
2. There is no risk that anyone will part with any more money than they originally intended.
More news when I get it.
